Ostrich Boys by Keith Gray

After the funeral of their best friend, Ross, his friends agree that it was a disgrace. In his memory, they steal his ashes to take them to the tiny village of Ross in Dumfries and Galloway, because “He thought it would be cool to be Ross in Ross”.

Unfortunately, lost bags and bad decisions later, they find themselves stuck with no way to move on and no way to go back.

This is a great story. As they boys travel north you get to know them and Ross.  Each character is very different, with Ross appearing to be the glue that held them together.  And as they talk about Ross, secrets begin to be revealed.

And, it’s very nice about school librarians 🙂

Ostrich Boys by Keith Gray won the Royal Mail Scottish Children’s Book Award 2009 and can be borrowed from the Teen Fiction section in the LRC.
