Well, I finished the Abhorsen Trilogy this afternoon (on the first day of the summer holidays) and I thought it was brilliant. There’s already a review here about Sabriel, but while the first book was good, the other two books, Lirael and Abhorsen, are just wonderful.
One of the reasons I liked them so much are the characters of Lirael and the Disreputable Dog. Lirael is a 3rd class Librarian who likes working in the Library because of the silence (oh, how I laughed). Like many a good fantasy heroine, she feels alone and aches to belong. The place she finds for herself is not what she would have imagined.
The Disreputable Dog is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever read. She’s playful but has a deadly serious purpose; she’s cuddly as a puppy but has terrifying powers; she’s mysterious but always there when you need her. The scenes between Dog and Lirael are always fascinating and alive.
You could read Lirael without having read Sabriel but Abhorsen wouldn’t make sense without the previous two. All three are available on the Teen Fiction shelves of the LRC.
Garth Nix also writes a blog on Amazon and he’s said that he’s writing another two Old Kingdom novels over the next couple of years.
