Rhythm of the Nations

First into the LRC this term are the Performing Arts Department with 2nd year researching musical instruments from around the world for a poster.

First the class identified the kind of information they would search for:

  • what is the instrument called?
  • what does it sounds like?
  • how is the sound produced?
  • what is it made of?
  • where does it come from?
  • who invented it?
  • what does it look like?
  • when is it used?

Photographer: Min Soo Kim. Released into public domain.

2nd years loved using this fantastic website as they could listen to many of the instruments. The ocarina has proven to be the most popular with the ehru and jaw harp a close second and third.

Of course, being the start of term, we had some hiccups with the computers and printers, but everybody managed to have a chance to listen to and choose the subject of their poster.

We also had a discussion about the benefits and drawbacks of wikipedia, with some pupils investigating the links at the bottom of the wiki pages, and others investigating the images available.

It’s also been great to see so many enthusiastic pupils using the LRC at lunchtime to complete their work. I’ll try to post some examples of the completed posters next week.
