For the first Social Subjects investigation this year, we decided to investigate the life of the Viking settlers at Jarlshof. 1st year pupils worked in teams of four, each person researching a different part of life in the village.
Groups had plenty of material, with masses of books from the LRC, links to websites and a box of fascinating artefacts from the Education Resource Service to help them.
Pupils were encouraged to think of keywords for searching in indexes and online.
When the groups got back together, they worked on a joint powerpoint presentation, with each person, complete with their own Viking name, providing information for one of the slides. The staff were delighted that pupils could already identify what made powerpoints interesting or boring!
Try playing Viking Quest to find out if you’ve got what it takes to be a Viking warrior.
It’s not just jumping into a longship, sailing to a nearby monastery and killing everything in sight. Raids take a lot of planning, you know!
