Focus on the 50s

Mrs Jeffrey’s 2nd year English class are reading the novel, Buddy, by Nigel Hinton. The main character is named after Buddy Holly, his father’s favourite pop star. Unfortunately, nobody had ever heard of Buddy Holly in the class.

So this morning, some of the class researched Buddy Holly’s life, career and death at the age of 23. Along the way, they found out about the 1950s, disc jockeys and listened to some of Buddy’s music (“My mum plays that!”)

Mrs Jeffrey and Mrs Macfadyen sat and plotted the next stage in the research and even came up with a 1950s jingle (“Focus on the 50s!”)

Fascinating fact: the song, American Pie, was written by Don McLean in memory of the day he discovered Buddy had been killed. Listen to the original, not the version by Madonna. People are still trying to figure out what the lyrics are about.
