Dangerous Reality by Malorie Blackman

Dominic’s Mum, Carol, is a scientist working on artificial intelligence. He’s really proud of her achievements, but deep inside he wishes maybe she could perhaps spend just a bit more time with him.

But that’s not going to happen right now when she’s trying to prove what her latest work can achieve. VIMS can go underwater, disarm bombs, break up concrete – it’ll go wherever it’s told and do whatever it’s told to do. Unfortunately, someone’s told it to attack, and Carol and Dominic are in very big trouble.

This is a great story with a really shocking surprise at the end.
